Battery Wet Cells Crack Repair

Due to the way wet cell batteries are manufactured and the chemical reaction inside the wet cell batteries, over the life of the battery, cracks can form in the case of the battery jar. These cracks on the wet cell case are caused by the internal materials used to construct the battery plates and the chemical processes in the battery to slowly over time, build up material on the plates causing bulging of the plates thereby putting stress on the seals and top of the battery case . Once this happens, then the battery will show signs of acid leaking and migration to the battery posts. Can these cracks be repaired? The short answer is yes. PSS has repaired cracks on numerous wet cell jars several times. We utilize special Epoxy that can be applied to the battery case to stop the acid from leaking out. But, we offer a word of caution. When you start to see these cracks appear on several battery jars, then the battery string is approaching the end of life. We recommend performing the crack repair if the facility is looking at replacing the battery string with in the next couple of years. Due to the age of the batteries, there is still going to be internal stress putting pressure on the battery case and additional cracks can form. Repairing the cracks is not a long term solution but a process to allow the battery string to still be used during the short term while putting together proper funding and scheduling to replace the string.
